FALL 2021

Fall Hiking Series 2021

Our Fall Hiking Series was a tremendous success, taking hikers deep into some of the world’s most spectacular rainforests. On one hike, the group followed a historic old wagon road through narrow trails and across well-maintained bridges. On another, the hikers followed seldom-trodden paths into parts of the forest, where the towering crowns of the trees form a canopy so dense no plant life can grow beneath it except the trees themselves. Another highlight of the fall program was a hike through the unique, sub-alpine ecosystem of Dakota Ridge leading to a grove of thousand-year-old yellow cedars. The fall program culminated in late November with a steep trek to the top of ELF’s new Birdsong Trail. Along the way, Ross Muirhead instructed the group on the importance of these sloped forests in preventing floods and washouts in the communities downslope of them. It was a valuable lesson to learn since all the forests featured in those hikes are under the constant threat of being logged. Also, most of the trails exist only because of the tireless efforts of organizations like ELF.
